WHO WE ARE

We are the Iowa City Chapter of Graduate Women in Science (GWIS). Our chapter was established in 2014 and hosted the National Annual Graduate Women in Science Conference in 2018.

Graduate Women in Science is a national organization that was formed in 1921 to foster scientific discussion and collaboration among women scientists, as women were largely excluded from most scientific societies. Today, people join GWIS to meet other scientists and promote the presence and visibility of women in science.

WHAT WE DO

United in Friendship through Science

The motto of GWIS. We embody this as a local chapter while we host events in the Iowa City area. We support not only women who are graduate students but others in the Iowa City community. We host and partner with other groups in Iowa City to provide a variety of types of events.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: We host events that target skills important for scientists.

OUTREACH: We partner with other groups to share science with others. We are always looking to make new connections so please contact us if you have an event request here.

SOCIAL: We host events to encourage connections across scientific disciplines ranging from networking to casual events.
